Water Budget of the Upper Diarizos Catchment, Troodos, Cyprus

The physical water balance model MODBIL was applied for the determination of the water budget of the upper Diarizos catchment, which is representative for the upper Troodos Massif in Cyprus. The model approach is based on the simulation of the water fluxes and water storages in and between the different physical systems atmosphere, interception, snow, soil, bedrock. As results spatial patterns for the main water balance components precipitation, real evapotranspiration, runoff and groundwater recharge are given out. Furthermore, the model results provide an insight into the physical system, e.g. the interactions of the regional meteorological, hydrological, and hydrogeological processes, the intra- and interannual variability, and the impacts on the regional water resources. Calibration and validation is based on the comparison of hydrographs with the simulated river discharge time-series of the catchment.
The model results for the Diarizos catchment reveal high groundwater recharge rates about 150 mm/a caused by the favourable distribution of precipitation and temperature in the winter months and by the widespread beneficial soil and bedrock properties. However, the limited volume and relatively high permeability of the fractured aquifers lead to a limited water storage and a relatively fast drainage. In addition, the model shows that the whole system is extremely sensitive concerning climate variability and climatic changes. For instance, a precipitation decrease of 13 % induces a lowering of 40 % for the total runoff (incl. baseflow) comparing the two modelling periods 1981-1990 and 1991-2000.
